Position size formula

shares = loss you accept / (entry minus stop)

For a short, use stop minus entry. Round down to a whole share. The loss you accept is a dollar amount, or a percent of your portfolio value.

Worked example

Example: ALFA on a $50,000 portfolio.

  1. Choose what you can lose

    1% of $50,000

    $500

  2. Set your stop, see what one share loses

Buy at $50, exit at $48

    $2

  3. Divide

    $500 ÷ $2, rounded down

That is $12,500 of ALFA, 25% of the portfolio. If the stop is hit, you lose $500.
